Horse Feed FAQs
Horses should consume 1.5-2% of their body weight in hay or forage daily. A 450kg horse typically needs 7-9kg of hay per day, adjusted according to workload and access to grazing.
Grain should only be used as a supplement if necessary, such as for performance horses or those requiring extra calories. Overfeeding can lead to colic or laminitis. Always introduce grain gradually and feed in small portions.
Horse Bedding FAQs
Common bedding options include straw, wood shavings, pellets, and paper. The best choice depends on absorbency, dust levels, and availability. Shavings and pellets are popular due to their absorbency and low dust content.
Daily mucking out is best to remove droppings and wet patches, keeping the stable dry and reducing ammonia build-up, which can cause respiratory issues. A deep clean should be done once a week.
Equestrian Clothing FAQs
Comfortable, well-fitted jodhpurs or breeches, a riding shirt, and proper riding boots are essential. A well-ventilated riding hat that meets safety standards is a must for protection. Gloves can help with grip, and in colder weather, layering is key.
Jodhpurs are longer and usually worn with short riding boots, while breeches are shorter and designed to be worn with tall riding boots. Breeches are more common for competition, whereas jodhpurs are often used for casual riding and younger riders.
Competing
A show jacket, white or light-coloured breeches, a stock tie or tie, a show shirt, and tall riding boots are standard. A black or navy riding hat that meets safety regulations is required, and gloves (usually white) are often mandatory.
Ensure your horse is well-groomed, with a neatly plaited mane if required for the discipline. Tack should be clean and well-fitted, and it’s a good idea to practise your test or course beforehand. Arrive early to allow time for warm-up and to settle any pre-competition nerves.
Essentials include your competition wear, horse’s tack, grooming kit, passport and entry details, plenty of water and snacks for both you and your horse, and a first-aid kit. A spare set of gloves, an extra girth, and a cooler rug for your horse can also be handy.
